Cataract Surgery Advances Not all cataract surgery is the same, do your homework and choose a doctor offering the latest advancements... Glossary: cataract surgery is the removal of the natural lens of the eye and replacement with an implant lens that helps to restore vision. Recent advances in lens technology have allowed doctors to develop bifocal lens such as the ReSTOR and Rezoom, as well as accommodating lenses such as the Crystalens that can help patients regain near vision as well as distance vision. Refractive lens exchange is the same surgery as cataract surgery, but done primarily to eliminate refractive errors (nearsightedness and farsightedness) as well as to restore vision up close.
More than 2 million people have cataract surgery each year, making it one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the United States. A cataract occurs when the lens inside the eye becomes milky or cloudy. Once this happens, glasses are no longer able to help the eye focus.
Commons symptoms of a cataract include: night-time glare from headlights, difficulty driving with the sun low in the sky, difficulty reading fine print and a muting of colors. The solution is to remove the cataract and place an implant lens in its place to restore the focusing ability of the eye.
Fortunately advances in cataract surgery over the last few years have made surgery safer, easier and more beneficial than ever before. There are several techniques to performing cataract surgery. Dr. Brian Stahl prefers the technique known as Clear-Cornea “NO Stitch” phacoemulsification. This procedure is an outpatient procedure and needs minimal amount of anesthesia to be pain free. Because there are no sutures, vision recovery is fast and comfortable.
One of the more striking advances in this procedure has come from using a laser to more accurately measure patients for their implant lenses used during surgery. This is known as optical coherence biometry and only and only a few practices offer this technology. Using this, we can often times dramatically reduce a persons need for distance glasses after surgery and the vast majority of our patients are able to drive without their glasses after cataract surgery, (but most still need “readers” for things up close). We also routinely take steps during cataract surgery to eliminate astigmatism; this combined with optical coherence biometry leads to the very best chance of obtaining good vision, free of glasses after surgery! Not all cataract surgery is the same and few doctors have taken the time and expense to offer the very latest advances in cataract surgery. So do your homework, ask your friends about their experiences, and chose your surgeon wisely. Stahl Vision- building better vision, one patient at a time... |
